How Should Christians Respond To Homosexuality?

During a recent Facebook debate I was asked the question: Is homosexuality a sin? Usually this question is asked of a Christian by someone looking to draw them into a battle of words, and quite inexplicably results in the Christian being called a bigot and “homophobe”. Needless to say a great many Christians shy away from the conversation or worse CHANGE their position to avoid being labeled by society or looked down upon.

So how should Christians respond to Homosexuality?

As Christians it is our duty to stand tall on our convictions and spread the TRUTH of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is not going to be easy, in fact as we get closer to the end times, many will lose their lives in this pursuit. So what is the TRUTH about homosexuality? And does modern culture and the popularity swing that has occurred over the last few years change that truth? These are big questions, so let’s get started:

For Christians there is only ONE standard for TRUTH, and that is HOLY SCRIPTURE. Anything that contradicts Holy Scripture cannot be trusted. So what does the Bible say about homosexuality? Where it is mentioned in scripture we find that homosexual activity is a SIN (Genesis 19:1-13; Leviticus 18:22; 20:13; Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9). This is true in both the Old and New Testaments. When Paul wrote his letter to the Romans, he was extremely clear:

Romans 1: 24-27
24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

The next big question that often comes up: are people born gay? From a Christian perspective YES… in the sense that we are ALL BORN SINNERS. The Sin resides in the flesh of our bodies, and we are all affected by Sin in different ways. Some people become aldulteres, some violent criminals, some drug addicts and some homosexuals among other things. It is your choice to act on sin or turn away from it. Just because you have a desire within you, does not mean that desire comes from God or is meant to be. NOW, this is typically where people get enraged and say things like “are you comparing two LOVING adults to MURDERERS?”. That depends, men can certainly LOVE other men. I love my brother, I love my father, I love my male friends. Love is GREAT. But when that love tuns into LUSTful thoughts or actions, that is where Sin comes into play. In that moment when two men or women have sex with one another (or even think of such things) they are consumed with lust… they are acting in Sin… and YES that Sin is no different than any other sin, including murder or lying.

But this is where Christians often go very wrong: they elevate Homosexuality to a HIGHER class of Sin. As if it is greater in some capacity and there is no Biblical evidence to support this notion. ALL SIN is vile in the eyes of God, from lying, cheating and stealing to murder or any other sin. Many Christians pick up the banner and march against homosexuality but IGNORE the high level of Divorce in the Church or the adultery that plagues our families.

So how should Christians approach this very touchy subject matter? This is difficult, and what I see many Christians doing is using a watered-down version of the Gospel so as not to offend anyone. Recently a fellow “Christian” said homosexuality is not a sin at all and that Jesus loves everyone equally. Only HALF of that statement is true, the latter half. The first half is a very dangerous lie, that can have severe and eternal consequences.

If you truly loved and cared for someone, why would you lie to them and give them a false sense of eternal security? So you can be popular now? So people will like you? Because you don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings or make them feel uncomfortable? Wake up Christians! How uncomfortable do you imagine Hell to be?

We are CALLED to make Disciples of ALL NATIONS. It is the Great Commission, it is Christianity 101. You cannot make a Disciple if you are misleading someone as to WHAT SIN is all about. Christ died on the cross for our Sins and rose three days later. All through the Gospel accounts Jesus himself tells us to REPENT from our Sins. To TURN AWAY. But how can we turn away from something that we do not even consider SIN to begin with?

All born-again Christians have experienced something that shattered their entire reality. They had to come face to face with the fact that they are SINNERS. For me, it was a ground-shaking revelation, and in that moment of conversion I was filled with the Greatest Joy and Sorrow I have ever felt and at the exact same time. It is an experience I have never had since and probably never will again. It is this complete understanding of Sin, and how it affects your life, that will allow you to truly seek the forgiveness of God and REPENT. What comes next is almost indescribable… it is the knowledge that you have been covered by God’s Grace, and your eternal destination has been secured… sealed away and protected by the promise of God Himself:

2 Corinthians 1:20-22
20 For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. 21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, 22 who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”

2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

There is a very serious problem all men face, the problem of Sin. There is only ONE solution to the problem and it has nothing to do with how nice you perceive yourself to be. The solution is Jesus Christ. At the end, when all men face judgement there will only be two choices: Eternal Salvation or Eternal Punishment. These two choices are VERY REAL, Heaven is REAL and Hell is REAL. As Christians it is our DUTY to help as many people as we can see this truth and guide them through the Narrow Gate. The only way we can do this is with the truth of the Gospel. You can present the Gospel in a loving and tender way, and you should ALWAYS strive to do just that… but PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE the Gospel to fit in with a fallen secular world. The two cannot mix any more than water and oil. It does not matter how many celebrities, tv shows, athletes or other public figures come out and wave the flag of homosexuality. Popularity of Sin does not make it LESS of a Sin, just like immorality does not become moral when a majority participate.

Go out into all nations, LOVE everyone including your enemies, give them the truth and do not be afraid to be shunned for your beliefs… in fact you will be HATED (Matthew 10:22). But be TRUTHFUL. God came to Earth in the flesh to give us this truth, and he died on the Cross to accept OUR PUNISHMENT for our sins. He already paid the price. The least we can do is make sure he did not die in vain.

Stay Strong & Stand Tall

Agree wholeheartedly, Keith. Would you mind if I used a post or two of yours on my site as guest posts? I know I don’t have a ton of followers, but I’d like to know your heart. All of God’s blessings, brother.
