Why Does God Allow Children To Starve?

This is a very old question asked of Theists for as long as I can remember, and very similar to the question… why does evil exist? For the question of starving children please allow me to be as blunt and straight forward as I can:

God does NOT allow children to starve, WE DO.

Yes, YOU and I and everyone else on Earth, we are responsible for the starving children. God has done his part to provide us with all the resources we need to provide food, clothing, shelter, health care, education, you name it… to EVERY living human on Earth. We have ABUNDANT resources that God has given us and what do we do with those resources?

We take care of ourselves first. If it’s a government we are talking about, we “the people” probably spend that money and those resources on building weapons of war.

Perhaps this is in our nature, or who we are as a people and it certainly is not something we like to think about as we sip our Starbucks Frappucinnos… but let’s try to remember something: When we walk out of our front door (especially if you live in the United States) we can probably walk 1-5 miles in any direction and quickly find several fast food restaurants and grocery stores. Yet if we continue to walk in that same direction for another 5,000 miles we are bound to find suffering and starvation.

Suffering that we look at on TV commercials asking us to send just .35 cents a day, or in newspapers, magazines and on the internet. Suffering that will get us to LIKE a meme on Facebook with a photo of a starving child, or cause us to go on a self-righteous rant that will probably rise to a heated debate among our friends. Then when the smoke settles and the dust clears, we have the gall to get angry with God over the situation. Why didn’t he magically make fruit trees spring up next to those children? Why doesn’t he just magically heal them all? Why this, why that… but there is one question we never seem to want to ask.

Why haven’t WE done something about it?

Again we go back to human nature and how it makes us more comfortable to cast aspersions and blame on others, than to look within ourselves for the answer. We do not have a starving child problem in the world, we have a human nature problem and until we come together as a unified RACE and overcome this need to kill each other and only look out for ourselves, we will ALWAYS have suffering.

Until we recognize we are ONE group of people, we will always sit smugly behind our borders with our Lattes and look sadly upon these poor starving children of the world… as we turn the channel, or flip the page and go on with our lives.

If you want to make a difference you can, if you want to go on with your life as if nothing is happening… that is your choice as well. But PLEASE do not blame GOD for your inaction, for your selfishness or for your willingness to turn a blind eye.

God is not to blame, WE are.
