Is Hell Fair?

hell

The Hell doctrine is one of the most important and less taught pillars of the Gospels. Most preachers avoid teaching it, because on the surface it looks completely “unfair”. But let’s examine it for a moment. We know from scripture that our BEST deeds are like filthy rags in the eyes of God (Isaiah 64:6). Meaning we think we are doing good and treating people well, but to a pure and Holy God we are not.

The next thing we need to understand, is that GOD is not only a loving God but a JUST God as well. Which is why a sacrifice had to be made in the old days, to remind men that there was a price to be paid for SIN.

Now let’s compare GODs justice to our own justice here on earth. Here are just SOME of the things God considers a SIN: lying, cheating, stealing, murder, anger, dishonoring your parents, praying to false idols and gods, calling the Lord’s name in vain, lusting after another woman or man even in thought, envy and pride. Now this is a SMALL list of sins, when you look that over and be HONEST with yourself, how many times have you sinned in your life? For me, the answer would probably be MILLIONS.

If we look at our laws, and particularly crimes that would be punishable by time in prison… how many years would you get sentenced to prison for committing a crime MILLIONS of times? You can cheat on your taxes ONE time and get 10 years in prison. You can murder 3 times and get LIFE in prison. You can even get sentenced to 800 years in prison!

You might say, YES but lying is not MURDER!!! That is unfair to punish me for lying… but isn’t that what a tax cheat is… a liar? So here we have a GOD who is Holy, Loving and Just. He has plainly told us his laws and what he considers to be a CRIME punishable by eternal separation from Him (Sin). He also KNOWS we will NOT be able to live a sin-free life and make it to heaven on our own power. This is why he sent Jesus to the cross. Once Jesus (GOD) came to earth to be crucified he became the FINAL sacrifice and paid the price for ALL the worlds sins past, present and future.

The ONLY Stipulation to accept his gift of grace, is that you believe in him with all your heart (in other words have a personal relationship with him) and REPENT or turn-away from your sins.

Sadly most people will not find their way to heaven (Matthew 7:13), because they have the problem of SIN. AS GOOD as they might be they are still SINFUL… and SIN Cannot enter the presence of a Holy God. Heaven is the ABODE of GOD, therefore to gain entrance you need to be cleansed of all SIN. There is no place on earth you can go to be cleansed of sin, there is only ONE way and that is through a relationship with Jesus Christ.

BUT HERE is the great news, ONCE you enter into that relationship with Jesus he gives you the GIFT of EVERLASTING life, and your eternity is sealed in his Grace. ON the PLUS side, entering that relationship will CHANGE your life forever in GREAT ways. You will live better, love better, see things in life that are truly important and experience everything in a different way.

Did God Create Sin?

anotherworldwp8nopeopleversion_by_night_fate

Did God create sin? This is a common question usually put to a Christian from Atheist circles. Obviously as Christians we do not believe God created sin, but rather sin was the direct result of our disobedience to God’s will. In other words, because of our “Free Will” we CHOSE to disobey God even though He warned us of the dangers well in advance. Once Adam and Eve made that choice, sin entered the world. Was this the first time sin occurred? No. Lucifer sinned against God first, then a third of the Angelic Host decided to follow Lucifer in his plans against God. This was however the first time sin “entered the world” meaning with Mankind’s sin the entire scope of God’s creation was affected. This includes the entire universe… EVERYTHING.

So let’s back up a minute. Why did God give us choice to begin with? Why did he have a forbidden tree in the Garden of Eden at all? Obviously God is omnipotent, which means he knows everything. He is the creator of time, which means he can see all the way to the end of it. He knew the outcome of placing that tree in the Garden, which means he knew Man would sin, which means he knew how this was all going to go down. All the way from the beginning he knew. Or did he?

Free Will is a powerful force, and many do not give it the respect it deserves. God DOES know EVERY possible outcome of EVERY possible choice you will ever make in your life. God does know all of the vast possibilities that your walk in life could produce… but that does not mean he knows which one you will inevitably choose. Let me use a simple illustration to clarify my point: Imagine a boy sitting at a table with two plates. On one plate sits an apple, on another a stack of cookies.

This boy is faced with three simple choices. One he could eat the apple. Two he could eat the cookies or Three he could choose neither apple nor cookies and walk away. Sure there are a million other choices he could make, like knocking the cookies on the floor and then run away laughing… but for the sake of this illustration let us imagine this hungry little boy WILL make one of those three choices today.

God knows all three choices AND the results that each of the choices will have on the child. He knows how this simple choice will lead to other choices and so on and so forth. Now the child’s Free Will takes over and HE makes his own choice. He eats the cookies (he was eyeballing them the whole time). God knew of the possibility but the boy still made the choice.

The same is true of us everyday of our lives. We make choices and many of those choices are sinful and harmful to our lives and the lives of others. God has given us everything we need to make the right choices, he has given us his living Word. He has given us the Holy Spirit. He has even given us a built-in moral compass to help guide us in life. What we do with all of those wonderful gifts is completely up to us. We can use them to glorify and love God, or we can ignore them and seek pleasure from the world. Free will: The greatest gift God ever gave us and the catalyst of every demented evil thought the human mind has ever conceived.

Why did God give us Free Will? Because without it, we would be mindless robots singing worship songs everyday. That is not true love and at the end of the day, this is what God wants most. To have a TRUE loving relationship with each and every one of us.

Who Created God?

eye of god

Whether you are a religious person or not, it is likely at some point in your life you pondered the existence of God. Many people believe that God created the entire Universe and this leads to a common question… who created God?

This question has been posed for centuries and one answer recently used by Atheist camps as a “logical” argument to disprove the existence of God, goes something like this: We know all things have a “cause” therefore God must need a “cause”, and if God needs a cause, he is not really god at all.

Do you see how this circular reasoning gets you into a game of mental gymnastics rather quickly? Let’s look at it from another angle: Most philosophers and scientists will agree that from nothing, nothing comes (at least as far as we have been able to observe it). Therefore if there was ever a time when literally “Nothing” existed, then I wouldn’t be here typing about it right now, in other words NOTHING would exist.

bnr0647However, let us imagine for a moment a box. This box represents EVERYTHING we know to “exist” which includes all of space, time, matter and energy in the Universe. It is all represented by the box and its contents. God exists “outside” of the box. He is not part of the universe, he created it. He is not affected by time, in fact he can see all the way from the beginning to the end of time as WE measure it, inside of our box.

So the answer to the question Who Created God? Is simply: NOTHING created God. How do we know this? We have a direct revelation from God to mankind in the form of Holy Scripture. Within the pages of the Living Word God quite clearly proclaims that he alone created all that there is, and there are no other Gods (Isaiah 43:10).

He is eternal with no beginning and no end, he just always WAS, IS and WILL BE. Now as a human living on planet Earth, this microscopic speck of dust in the cosmos, it is quite difficult to put our minds around the concept of something always existing. Much like it is nearly impossible to fathom what an eternity will feel like.

But as a believer in Jesus Christ and Holy Scripture, once you put your complete faith in the first 10 words of the Bible “In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth”, then all other miracles are so small, that they are barely noticeable. Think about that long and hard, God uttered words from his breath, and the entire universe was created from nothing but His power. This is a God with power beyond our imagination, and there is no other (Deuteronomy 4:35).

Can Christians Lose Their Salvation?

jeremy-yap-199223
Photo by Jeremy Yap on Unsplash

This question cuts to the core doctrine of Christianity… the blood atonement of Jesus Christ. There is NO greater pillar in the foundation of Christian belief, than the blood of Christ that atones for all sin.

There are groups of people, churches and other organizations that teach that a Christian can lose their salvation through continued sin… it is so prevalent in fact they have a name for it “Conditional Security”. In a nutshell, they teach that you are given eternal salvation when you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior and repent “or turn away” from your sin, but that if you do not live in continued obedience to Christ… you could lose your gift of salvation.

The more I studied scripture, prayed and meditated on this question the more I realized just how utterly powerless this idea renders God. If we have to rely on OURSELVES to get to Heaven, we are DOOMED. Every good deed we do, is like a filthy rag in God’s eyes, so what HOPE do we have?

Isaiah 64:6
But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.

Why would God send his ONLY BEGOTTEN SON to DIE on the Cross if the very people he was sent to save, would again condemn themselves to damnation… by doing the inevitable… and sinning again? You see God knows we will continue to sin and this will not stop until we are given our eternal bodies of perfection, free from the sinful nature (1 Corinthians 15:50-53).

If we have the power to “override” our eternal salvation by committing sin, then there is NO power in the Blood of Christ.

John 10:28-29
28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.

Here John clearly proclaims once we are given eternal life, we shall NEVER perish. He doesn’t say “And I give them eternal life, until they sin again” or “… as long as they live a sin-free life”.

You see, we can NEVER live a sin-free life, before or after our salvation, not as long as we inhabit these bodies that are cursed with the sinful nature.
(Psalm 51:5, Ecclesiastes 7:20)

But what about people who turn their back on God? Walk away from their faith and deny Christ? For me, it is hard to imagine anyone receiving the Holy Spirit in their life and then rejecting Jesus Christ… but it is equally hard for me to imagine the God that I worship FORCING someone to spend an eternity with Him in Heaven, when someone has chosen to deny Him.

You might hear many atheists come forward and proclaim they were once Christians, such as prominent author Bart Erhman, and now they reject Jesus Christ and don’t believe in God anymore. So let us take a closer look at what it means to actually BE a Christian so we can discern if these claims are true.

According to Scripture, a Christian is someone who has been born again by God (John 3:3; John 3:7; 1 Peter 1:23) and has put faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8 tells us that it is “… by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”

Read that last line again very closely… “NOT from yourselves, it is the gift of God”. You see, once we have truly given ourselves over to Christ our eternity is sealed. If men like Erhman continually walk through life denying Christ, then it is very unlikely they ever had salvation to begin with. Notice I used the word “continually”, why? Because you shouldn’t be led to believe you will never sin again once you are saved.

“Born Again” does NOT mean you will never sin again, even Paul one of the greatest Christians in the New Testament struggled with ongoing sin (Romans 7:15). What it does mean is you will come to hate sin, and when you do fall to temptation, you will recognize what you have done, confess your sin to God and ask for forgiveness.

This may lead to the question, but what if I continually fall to the same temptation? Will God continue to forgive me? Peter had a similar question for Jesus…

Matthew 18:21-22
21 Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

In this verse, Jesus is illustrating the immeasurable power of God’s grace to forgive. THIS is the power of Christ’s Blood! He WAS the final sacrifice… his blood cleansed all who believe in Him.

Now, there are some scriptures that people can point to as evidence that you CAN lose your salvation, so let us take a look a couple of those verses now.

Ezekiel 33:13
Though I say to the righteous that they shall surely live, yet if they trust in their righteousness and commit iniquity, none of their righteous deeds shall be remembered; but in the iniquity that they have committed they shall die.

At first glance, this passage appears to state that the righteous (believers) will lose their salvation if they sin, but that would be reading the passage out of context. God sent Ezekiel out to the exiled Israelites to warn them of the “sword coming upon the land” (Ezekiel 33:3), in other words a WAR is coming. The death this passage is referring to is a physical death during war, not a spiritual death. In other words, he was telling the exiles… repent from your sins now or face the very physical punishment of death.

Matthew 7:21-23
… Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

In this verse it appears to say that some Christians won’t get into Heaven, but the true meaning behind these words points to a relationship with Jesus Christ. Just because someone says “I am a Christian” with their lips, doesn’t mean they have that relationship. Without that relationship, which is the essence of Christianity, there is no eternal salvation.

So what is the best way to discern when a Bible passage is true? There are a couple of things I want to say about this, first and foremost you MUST pray to God for Discernment and Wisdom EVERY time you read your Bible. Second, if a vast majority of scripture points to one meaning, and you find one or two that seem to contradict that meaning, be sure you are reading the verse in complete context.

It is my hope and prayer that if you take one thing away from this article, it is that once you ask Jesus Christ to come into your life, repent of your sins and ask forgiveness, and truly BELIEVE in His name… you WILL be granted the gift of eternal life in Heaven.

And this gift is one that can never be given back or taken away.

How Should Christians Respond To Homosexuality?

levi-saunders-133027
Photo by Levi Saunders on Unsplash

During a recent Facebook debate I was asked the question: Is homosexuality a sin? Usually this question is asked of a Christian by someone looking to draw them into a battle of words, and quite inexplicably results in the Christian being called a bigot and “homophobe”. Needless to say a great many Christians shy away from the conversation or worse CHANGE their position to avoid being labeled by society or looked down upon.

So how should Christians respond to Homosexuality?

As Christians it is our duty to stand tall on our convictions and spread the TRUTH of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is not going to be easy, in fact as we get closer to the end times, many will lose their lives in this pursuit. So what is the TRUTH about homosexuality? And does modern culture and the popularity swing that has occurred over the last few years change that truth? These are big questions, so let’s get started:

For Christians there is only ONE standard for TRUTH, and that is HOLY SCRIPTURE. Anything that contradicts Holy Scripture cannot be trusted. So what does the Bible say about homosexuality? Where it is mentioned in scripture we find that homosexual activity is a SIN (Genesis 19:1-13; Leviticus 18:22; 20:13; Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9). This is true in both the Old and New Testaments. When Paul wrote his letter to the Romans, he was extremely clear:

Romans 1: 24-27
24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

The next big question that often comes up: are people born gay? From a Christian perspective YES… in the sense that we are ALL BORN SINNERS. The Sin resides in the flesh of our bodies, and we are all affected by Sin in different ways. Some people become aldulteres, some violent criminals, some drug addicts and some homosexuals among other things. It is your choice to act on sin or turn away from it. Just because you have a desire within you, does not mean that desire comes from God or is meant to be. NOW, this is typically where people get enraged and say things like “are you comparing two LOVING adults to MURDERERS?”. That depends, men can certainly LOVE other men. I love my brother, I love my father, I love my male friends. Love is GREAT. But when that love tuns into LUSTful thoughts or actions, that is where Sin comes into play. In that moment when two men or women have sex with one another (or even think of such things) they are consumed with lust… they are acting in Sin… and YES that Sin is no different than any other sin, including murder or lying.

But this is where Christians often go very wrong: they elevate Homosexuality to a HIGHER class of Sin. As if it is greater in some capacity and there is no Biblical evidence to support this notion. ALL SIN is vile in the eyes of God, from lying, cheating and stealing to murder or any other sin. Many Christians pick up the banner and march against homosexuality but IGNORE the high level of Divorce in the Church or the adultery that plagues our families.

So how should Christians approach this very touchy subject matter? This is difficult, and what I see many Christians doing is using a watered-down version of the Gospel so as not to offend anyone. Recently a fellow “Christian” said homosexuality is not a sin at all and that Jesus loves everyone equally. Only HALF of that statement is true, the latter half. The first half is a very dangerous lie, that can have severe and eternal consequences.

If you truly loved and cared for someone, why would you lie to them and give them a false sense of eternal security? So you can be popular now? So people will like you? Because you don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings or make them feel uncomfortable? Wake up Christians! How uncomfortable do you imagine Hell to be?

We are CALLED to make Disciples of ALL NATIONS. It is the Great Commission, it is Christianity 101. You cannot make a Disciple if you are misleading someone as to WHAT SIN is all about. Christ died on the cross for our Sins and rose three days later. All through the Gospel accounts Jesus himself tells us to REPENT from our Sins. To TURN AWAY. But how can we turn away from something that we do not even consider SIN to begin with?

All born-again Christians have experienced something that shattered their entire reality. They had to come face to face with the fact that they are SINNERS. For me, it was a ground-shaking revelation, and in that moment of conversion I was filled with the Greatest Joy and Sorrow I have ever felt and at the exact same time. It is an experience I have never had since and probably never will again. It is this complete understanding of Sin, and how it affects your life, that will allow you to truly seek the forgiveness of God and REPENT. What comes next is almost indescribable… it is the knowledge that you have been covered by God’s Grace, and your eternal destination has been secured… sealed away and protected by the promise of God Himself:

2 Corinthians 1:20-22
20 For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. 21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, 22 who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”

2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

There is a very serious problem all men face, the problem of Sin. There is only ONE solution to the problem and it has nothing to do with how nice you perceive yourself to be. The solution is Jesus Christ. At the end, when all men face judgement there will only be two choices: Eternal Salvation or Eternal Punishment. These two choices are VERY REAL, Heaven is REAL and Hell is REAL. As Christians it is our DUTY to help as many people as we can see this truth and guide them through the Narrow Gate. The only way we can do this is with the truth of the Gospel. You can present the Gospel in a loving and tender way, and you should ALWAYS strive to do just that… but PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE the Gospel to fit in with a fallen secular world. The two cannot mix any more than water and oil. It does not matter how many celebrities, tv shows, athletes or other public figures come out and wave the flag of homosexuality. Popularity of Sin does not make it LESS of a Sin, just like immorality does not become moral when a majority participate.

Go out into all nations, LOVE everyone including your enemies, give them the truth and do not be afraid to be shunned for your beliefs… in fact you will be HATED (Matthew 10:22). But be TRUTHFUL. God came to Earth in the flesh to give us this truth, and he died on the Cross to accept OUR PUNISHMENT for our sins. He already paid the price. The least we can do is make sure he did not die in vain.

How Harmful Is Pornography?

We have all heard about the destructive power of drug addictions and even food addictions and obesity, but rarely do we hear or talk about the largest addiction problem the world faces: Pornography.

The destructive force of pornography is something that seems to be a taboo subject in our culture. We can look at statistics and discover why the people profiting from it want to keep it under wraps… but why does society in general? Why is there this notion that there is nothing wrong with Pornography? Or that “everyone” is looking at it, so what’s the big deal?

In this article, I want to explore the devastating effects you may have never considered about Pornography and Porn Addiction, then I hope to offer some solutions and resources for those who struggle with it daily.

Before we get started take a look at some numbers collected by Brigham Young University:

  • GENERAL PORNOGRAPHY STATISTICS:
  • Size of the Industry $57.0 billion world-wide – $12.0 billion US
  • Adult Videos $20.0 billion
  • Escort Services $11.0 billion
  • Magazines $ 7.5 billion
  • Sex Clubs $ 5.0 billion
  • Phone Sex $ 4.5 billion
  • Cable & Pay Per View $ 2.5 billion
  • Internet $ 2.5 billion
  • CD-Rom $ 1.5 billion
  • Novelties $ 1.0 billion
  • Other $ 1.5 billion
  • Porn revenue is larger than all combined revenues of all professional football, baseball and basketball franchises.
  • US porn revenue exceeds the combined revenues of ABC, CBS, and NBC (6.2 billion)
  • Child pornography generates $3 billion annually
  • INTERNET PORN STATISTICS:
  • Pornographic websites 4.2 million (12% of total websites)
  • Pornographic pages 372 million
  • Daily pornographic search engine requests 68 million (25% of total search engine requests)
  • Daily pornographic emails 2.5 billion (8% of total emails)
  • Average daily pornographic emails/user 4.5 per Internet user
  • Monthly Pornographic downloads (Peer-to-peer) 1.5 billion (35% of all downloads)
  • Daily Gnutella “child pornography” requests 116 thousand
  • Websites offering illegal child pornography 100 thousand
  • Sexual solicitations of youth made in chat rooms 89%
  • Youths who received sexual solicitation 20%
  • Worldwide visitors to pornographic web sites 72 million annually
  • CHILDREN’S EXPOSURE TO PORNOGRAPHY:
  • Average age of first Internet exposure to pornography 11 years old
  • Largest consumer of Internet pornography 12-17 age group
  • 15-17 year olds having multiple hard-core exposures 80%
  • 8-16 year olds having viewed porn online 90% (most while doing homework)
  • 7-17 year olds who would freely give out home address 29%
  • 7-17 year olds who would freely give out email address 14%
  • Children’s characters linked to thousands of porn links 26 (including Pokeman and Action Man)

It is my hope that after you read these statistics your eyes are opened to the massive problem we are facing. These statistics do not even begin to uncover all of the damage done to families across the world, relationships, and individuals being exploited within the industry itself.

Because of the rampant explosion and accessbility of online porn, there have not been many studies of the overall effects, but all of the studies that have been done show pornography to be highly addictive, in a very real and chemical way.

According to WebMD:
In November 2004, a panel of experts testified before a Senate subcommittee that a product which millions of Americans consume is dangerously addictive. They were talking about pornography. The effects of porn on the brain were called “toxic” and compared to cocaine. One psychologist claimed “prolonged exposure to pornography stimulates a preference for depictions of group sex, sadomasochistic practices, and sexual contact with animals.”

And Psychology Today:
In a 2004 testimony before the United States Senate, Dr. Jill Manning shared some interesting data regarding pornography and relationships. In her research she found that 56 percent of divorce cases involved one party having an obsessive interest in pornographic websites.

Every year for the past decade there have been roughly 1 million divorces in the United States. If half of the people divorcing claim pornography as the culprit, that means there are 500,000 marriages annually that are failing due to pornography.

As a man who struggled with pornography addiction for years, I can tell you it is VERY real. In fact, to this day I still have to be on guard every single day and take measures to avoid and control urges when they arise. There is a fantastic book on this subject called “Every Man’s Battle” by Stephen Arterburn and Fred Stoeker. It is written from a Christian perspective and offers great advice for ALL men on how to avoid sexual temptation. It comes with my highest recommendation, I have read the book and use the tools inside in my daily walk with Christ and believe in what it teaches.

Now, let’s take a moment and discuss how men and women differ when it comes to pornography and sexual tempation. Men are wired differently than women. Men are very visual creatures, meaning the simplest and most innocent of images can trigger sexual temptation. Not always but certainly sometimes and you never know when it’s going to happen. Your husband, or boyfriend could be innocently reading his Facebook news feed one moment, catch an image of one of his “Facebook friends” in a skimpy bathing suit and BOOM just like that, a switch is thrown in his body, chemical processes start to take place and urges begin to well up. The next thing you know he is visiting one of his favorite free porn sites he has visited a thousand times before. Women however get more stimulation from erotic fantasy… meaning they would rather read a story then look at an x-rated photo. If they watch pornography they usually prefer story-driven films as opposed to just sex scenes.

When we understand how men and women differ as to what causes them to be tempted sexually, it is easy to imagine why the internet is so much more dangerous for men, than women (as far as sexual temptations go). You will be hard pressed to surf online for more than 5 minutes and not find scantily clad women in innocent photos, advertisements or videos or actually viewing sexually related material, inadvertently or not. Erotic stories however are much more difficult to stumble upon.

So how far-reaching is the destructive power of pornography? Let’s list some areas:

  • Family units and relationships – pornography is linked to nearly HALF of all divorces, meaning broken homes and children suffering from the loss of a parent.
  • Human trafficking – 300,000 children per year in the US are at risk of being used for sexual exploitation – The Covering House
  • STD Transmission among porn actors – Only 17% of heterosexual pornography utilizes condoms. Just 2 of the 200 Adult Film Companies require the use of condoms, and many of the others require performers to NOT use condoms for continued employment. – Covenant Eyes
  • Desensitization – Studies are beginning to show that those who frequent porn sites are more likely to view sex strictly as a physical activity and women as sex objexts. – APA

Probably the single biggest stumbling block we face as a nation, as a society, as a culture is that the vast majority of the population doesn’t even believe pornograpy is a problem in the first place. We know that we have a drug problem, a drunk driving problem, an underage pregnancy problem, an obesity problem… we are easily able to identify MOST other major problems we face. So what is stopping us from recognizing pornography for what it is, purely destructive and dangerous on every level?

This is a tough question, which probably has many different answers or contributing factors… but what I have noticed in the past 30 years is a severe drop in moral standards of right and wrong. Behavior that was taboo 30 years ago is applauded today. Is this going to change? Are we going to find our way back as a nation? No, we are too far gone. But what we can do is educate people on this particular problem and raise awareness levels, which is why I am writing this article.

If you are in a married or committed relationship and feel you have a problem with pornography in your life, the rest of this article is for you. Just like any other addiction or temptation you can overcome the desire to watch porn in your life and as a result avoid damaging your relationship any further. You can also begin to repair and build trust again with your partner when they see you are willing to take positive steps in this area.

Here are the steps I have taken in my life that have brought me great success:

  • Pray and meditate on the Word of God. Always take problems like this to God first and if you feel sexual urges begin to build up inside, grab your Bible and start reading Scripture. This helps me 99% of the time to divert my mind and get me back on track spiritually.
  • Covenant Eyes -This software is INVALUABLE for me. Once installed it eliminates the chance of visiting a porn website on your computer, and even blocks images that are questionable and may cause you to be tempted sexually. It is available for all devices. It does have an monthly subscription, but it is very affordable and absolutely effective in what it sets out to accomplish.
  • Bounce the eyes, this is a trick I learned from the book I recommended earlier “Every Man’s Battle”. The basic exercise goes like this, if you see anything in your day that COULD potentially be a trigger for sexual temptation – immediately bounce or move your eyes in another direction. Once you learn to do this repeatedly, it will become natural and will instantly put you in the right frame of mind and identify the sin you were about to partake in.
  • Push away. Safe Eyes is a great tool but it will not stop 100% of the sexually tempting material you could come across on your internet travels. For this reason I have learned to push quickly away from my computer when I see something like this, and leave the computer. Treat it almost like a bee sting, jump up and move away. This gives you time to gather your thoughts, change your frame of mind and go back to your computer when you are ready.
  • Be around people. If you have a computer in an office or bedroom, where you are alone with the internet for long periods of time, you may consider moving it to a common living space, where your wife or significant other is nearby frequently. This will GREATLY reduce the temptation to use internet porn in most cases… and if you are serious about kicking this habit, you should think this option over.
  • Find and use accountability partners. It is best if this partner is NOT your wife or significant other, but rather a Church Brother or Sister, that you know and trust. What you will do is confide in this person the problem you are having, and it will be their job to HOLD YOU ACCOUNTABLE and constantly ask you the tough questions about how you are doing on your quest. Another great feature of Safe Eyes is the ability for it to EMAIL people of your choice a report of your internet activities. If you are serious you need to be held ACCOUNTABLE.

Please remember, as with almost any area of your life that you need help, you are not alone. More men (and women) than you can imagine face the same problems with porn that you do. Myself included. If you are a member of a church inquire with them and find out if they have a small group you can join for people with similar problems. The more of a support system you build the better chance you will have to stay porn free.
